Air-Quality-Intelligence-for-Schools-Communities.jpg

Air pollution is one of the greatest environmental threats to public health, with children and vulnerable individuals among those most affected. EarthSense helps schools, councils and community organisations better understand local air quality through real-time monitoring, public engagement and environmental intelligence.

Whether supporting a single school, a community-led project or a city-wide clean air initiative, EarthSense provides the tools to turn environmental data into meaningful action.

Supporting communities through trusted air quality intelligence

Understanding local air quality is the first step towards improving it. EarthSense provides accessible monitoring, modelling and public engagement tools that help schools, residents and local authorities understand pollution, encourage positive behaviour change and support healthier communities.

Challenges facing schools & communities

Protecting Children’s Health

Children are more vulnerable to the effects of air pollution. Understanding exposure around schools, playgrounds and community spaces helps create healthier environments and supports informed decisions that reduce pollution exposure.

Raising Awareness

Air pollution can often feel invisible. Make local air quality visible through clear, accessible information that helps communities understand pollution levels, potential health impacts and opportunities for positive action.

Supporting Behaviour Change

Trusted environmental data helps encourage lasting behaviour change. Support active travel, reduce vehicle idling and promote cleaner everyday choices with evidence that demonstrates the benefits of local initiatives.

Demonstrating Impact

Measure the effectiveness of clean air initiatives, investments and community programmes using real-world environmental evidence. Understand what works, demonstrate success and inform future environmental improvements.

Engaging Communities

Provide transparent air quality information that helps parents, residents, schools and local organisations understand local conditions, build trust and actively participate in improving community environments.

Building Evidence

Support funding applications, future investment and policy decisions with reliable monitoring and environmental intelligence. Build a strong evidence base for long-term environmental planning and healthier communities.

As part of the BBC’s Fighting for Air programme, EarthSense worked with community group Kings Heath CAN, local schools, and residents in Birmingham to demonstrate how collective action can improve air quality. Using Zephyr® air quality monitors to measure the impact of traffic reduction and active travel initiatives, the project showed measurable improvements in nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) levels. The initiative highlighted the power of community-led behaviour change and inspired further clean air projects across schools, councils, and local neighbourhoods.

Birmingham Ciry Council Schools.png

Birmingham City Council partnered with EarthSense to deliver one of the UK’s largest school-based air quality awareness programmes, helping students better understand the impact of pollution on their health and environment. By deploying air quality monitors across schools throughout the city and making data publicly accessible, the initiative supports education, encourages active travel, and empowers communities to take action. The project is helping to drive behavioural change, raise awareness of air pollution, and support Birmingham’s wider clean air ambitions.
